Project Description Summary Year Grant
Commercial Lamb Production Utilizing Advanced Reproductive Technologies Sheep/lamb meat consumption continues to rise worldwide; therefore, efficient strategies to increase flock size are integral to the success of sheep industry. Reproductive management is crucial to increasing the efficiency of sheep breeding programs. The use of assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) has the potential to increase efficiency significantly. The implementation of multiple ovulation and embryo transfer (MOET) in combination with genomic selection and Artificial Insemination (AI) is the most efficient way to increase genetic gain, and thus increase reproductive efficiency within the Sheep industry. 2012
Improving Functional Value of Lamb Meat In addition to nutritional value, a very important criterion for the selection of meat, for the modern consumer is the health aspect, i.e. the content of fat and the profile of fatty acids in meat. The content of fat and fatty acids, among other things, is  conditioned by the  feeding system and  the rearing method. Nutrition management of lambs had  a  significant  place  and  provided  the  opportunity  to  model  the composition of  meat  and  fatty  acids,  which  contributes  to  the  improvement  of  fat content, the optimal ratio of saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, as well as a more favourable ratio of n-6/n-3 and CLA. Omega 3 fatty acids are essential for the human body  (reduce  the  risk  of  cancer,  inflammation,  arthritis,  they  are  important  for cognitive  brain  function). Conjugated  linoleic  acid (CLA) is of great importance, since it has an anticancer, antidiabetic effect as well as  an  effect  on  the  immune  system,  indicating  a  direction  for  future  research  on lamb meat. 2015
Production of functional (CLA-enriched) goat milk by innovative feeding and breeding methods Dairy products goats are important sources of nutrients, supplying high quality protein, energy, and a variety of minerals and vitamins. Consumption of CLA-enriched milk could provide considerable benefits for human health, strategies to produce milk with higher CLA content provide new marketing opportunities. The results of this ort he are undeniably comprehensive. Goat’s cheese and other products can be manufactured from CLA enriched milk. ort he cheese industry therefore, they have shown that cheese can be marketed as a functional food with no significant loss of taste and other important sensory properties. The medical, pharmaceutical and food industries also stand to benefit from this research. 2015
